The Cisco CCIE Storage Networking Certification is basically for Expert Level Network Engineers with a focus on Storage Networking at a very advanced level – the expert level.

Cisco CCIE stands for “Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert”. Apart from the Cisco Certified Architect Certification, this certification is the highest level in terms of technical networking knowledge. Cisco CCIE Certifications are tested in a different manner than other Cisco Certifications and include practical labs as part of the certification.

Requirements for Certification

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional certifications or training courses are not required. Instead, candidates must first pass a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam. You are expected to have an in-depth understanding of the topics in the exam blueprints and strongly encouraged to have three to five years of job experience before attempting certification. You can review the exam preparation materials included on this page for more information.

Step One: CCIE Storage Networking Written Exam

You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam which covers storage networking concepts, features, design, applications, management and device operations before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.

Step Two: CCIE Storage Networking Lab Exam

The eight-hour lab exam tests your ability to get the storage area network running in a timed test situation. You must pass the lab within three years of passing the written to achieve certification. Your first lab attempt must be made within 18 months.

On October 19th, 2010, Cisco announced enhancements and upgrades to achieving the Cisco professional level security certification.  In doing so, the CCSP certification will be replaced in the near future by the CCNP Security certification.  The CCNP Security certification is designed to enforce the skills needed to deploy, service and support from Cisco Network Security Engineers.

For those who are pursuing the CCSP certification, the exams will be available until April 2011 and you will have the ability to obtain a CCSP until October 2011.  At that point, the CCSP will only be recognized as active until 2014, therefore it is advisable to pursue the CCNP Security.

There are 4 required exams to achieve this level of certification in the Cisco Security Track.

  1. Exam  642 – 637  Securing Networks with Cisco Routers and Switches (SECURE v1.0)
  2. Exam  642 – 627  Implementing Cisco Intrusion Prevention System v7.0 (IPS v7.0) –Available November 26th, 2010
  3. Exam  642 – 617  Deploying Cisco ASA Firewall Solutions (FIREWALL v1.0)
  4. Exam  642 – 647  Deploying Cisco ASA VPN Solutions (VPN v1.0) —coming soon
